The Perfect Clifton Poinsettia

Christmas just isn't Christmas without a cheery Poinsettia!

Christmas just isn’t Christmas without a cheery Poinsettia. Originating from Mexico and now available in a wide range of colours they suit any Christmas style and make the perfect seasonal gift!

Our Six Top Tips

  • Ensure you buy your Poinsettia from a reputable supplier …. such as Clifton Nurseries.
  • Keep them in bright, but filtered light, away from strong sun and draughts, preferably at a temperature between 15 - 20°.
  • Be careful when transporting Poinsettia from the shop to your home in the winter; just like us, Poinsettia don’t like cold outdoor temperatures!
  • Don’t overwater them; water only when the surface of the compost has begun to dry out.
  • Mist them regularly (with a Clifton sprayer!) to increase the humidity.
  • To use Poinsettia leaves as fresh flowers in a vase, cut the bracts, drip the cut ends in boiling water for 20 seconds, then immediately put into cold water, and you’re ready to arrange.

Arranging Your Poinsettia

A traditional red Poinsettia placed in a single pot on a table looks classically beautiful, but with the large range of sizes and colours of Poinsettias now available, they can be displayed in a range of ways to suit your personal style.

From hanging kodedama to multi-colour displays in large pots, and from tree decorations to table centres, Poinsettia are perfect for Christmas, wherever you place them.

Did you Know?

  • The ancient Aztecs (the Mexican Indians) prized the Poinsettia as a symbol of purity.
  • Centuries later, Mexico’s early Christians adopted the Poinsettia as their Christmas flower due to its colour and the flowering time coinciding with Christmas – for some, the star-shaped bracts of the Poinsettia symbolize the star of Bethlehem.
  • In a Mexican legend, a child who could not afford a gift to offer to Christ on Christmas Eve was encouraged to make a bouquet with some weeds from the roadside and took them into the church, where to everybody’s amazement they bloomed into bright red flowers.
  • ……….. and don’t forget - National Poinsettia Day is 12th December!
