Cacti – Desert Types

Many of the desert types of Cacti make ideal houseplants – as long as they have a sunny spot, they will thrive with very little care and attention.

Light

These plants thrive in strong light and will tolerate direct sunlight. The light condition is critical during winter when it is essential to place the Cactus in the lightest spot possible.

Water

From April to September, allow the surface of the compost to completely dry between watering. When watering during these months, ensure that all the compost is thoroughly moist. Use tepid water. Reduce watering in the late summer and after approximately the middle of autumn keep the cactus almost completely dry, giving it just enough water to prevent it from shrivelling up.

Temperature

Require average warmth from April through to September. Keep the cacti cool during the winter months since watering is reduced. Cacti housed on windowsills can be brought into the house at night if the weather is very cold and there is no artificial heat.

Feed

Feed with a liquid fertiliser only from April to September.

Repot

Cacti should be repotted once a year during the spring when they are young, into a pot that is only one size up. After this, repotting should only be carried out if it is essential.
